Game 6: The AI Detective

Introduction

Society has become a place where Artificial Intelligences have evolved in such a way that their products are almost indistinguishable from those of humans. Who/What can be trusted? Are human capacities being replaced by algorithms? People are increasingly confused as AIs are starting to take hold of stages where humans were previously the only actors: education, art, science… AI is infiltrating everything, and strange situations come up.

A detective (your teacher) has been commissioned to investigate a mystery related to Artificial Intelligence by a well-known writer of young adult novels, Rose FV.

The case is the following:

Rose FV has just published her second book, a dystopia called “Echoes of Tomorrow: A Tale of Humans and Machines”, and she is about to start a national tour of presentations and interviews. The day before her first event at Madrid’s book fair, after answering congratulatory calls from friends and relatives, she feels extremely happy, but she is unable to sleep due to excitement.

As the night falls, she decides to browse several websites and social media accounts updating on AI’s amazing latest capabilities. In her search, she finds a website disseminating short novels entirely written by AIs. Suddenly, a novel with a title just like the one she is going to present tomorrow catches her eye. Her heartbeat increases with curiosity while she starts to download it. When she opens the file and flip through its pages, she discovers that the characters, situations, and plot are almost the same as those she has written. Even the use of language and syntax is very similar to original! She can’t believe her eyes!

The next morning, Rose FV, in a state of shock, decides to hire the services of a prestigious private detective to clarify the facts: Could anyone have hacked her computer, stolen her notes, and uploaded them on the dark web? Could a human-created algorithm have read her mind and her diaries and written almost the same story in a matter of seconds? What’s more, she is concerned because, maybe, her readers could think that she just copied the novel from the AI version, which could ruin her career!

The detective, however, used only to analysing human behaviour, hardly knows anything about Artificial Intelligence, and decides to ask for help from the young people at your school.

Will you help the detective solve the AI mystery?

Are you in? If so, then it’s your time to give the maximum during the 3-level investigation process to unravel this AI enigma!

The main aim of the game is to earn as many “detective” points and badges as possible by completing the challenges (mandatory and additional) in all three game levels of investigation:

  1. MACHINE;
  2. CYBORG;
  3. BRAIN MASTER.

The best ones will be awarded with the AI-generated diploma and final badge 🏅 of “JUNIOR AI DETECTIVE“, specifying the total number of points earned and your Ranking position in the class leaderboard 🏆.

This title means that you have become an expert in AI and have come up with a feasible and creative solution for this AI case.

In addition, the “JUNIOR AI DETECTIVE” title gives the player the opportunity to gain access to confidential information about AI operations, the AI novel and her writer, and you could earn an additional 5+ mark!
We count on you to continue unravelling new algorithmic mysteries!

The player starting the investigation has 0 “detective” points. As challenges are completed, the player gains a certain number of “detective” points in each level. The investigation process consists of three levels: 1) MACHINE; 2) CYBORG; 3) BRAIN MASTER.

Each level will test you in various areas related to Artificial Intelligence (How AI works; ethical AI-related dilemmas; human and artificial brains, etc.). Each stage will include specific challenges (mandatory and additional/optional). You will earn “detective” points for each challenge and you can also earn badges at the end of each level. The more “detective” points and badges you earn, the more information we will be able to reveal to you about AI operations, the AI novel and the writer, which will help you in your own investigation and contribute to your AI knowledge.

If you manage to get a minimum of two golden badges after passing the 3 investigation levels and 200 detective points, you will become a JUNIOR AI DETECTIVE and we will tell you all what we know about AI operations, the AI novel and her writer.

Here’s what you can get at each level of investigation:

LEVEL 1 - ALGORITHMIC ADVENTURE

The Labyrinth of Intelligence
“MACHINE” Level

  • On this level you can earn max 120 points. (100 mandatory + 20 additional)

You will receive access to the challenges in due course from the game leader with information on the time you have to complete them.

LEVEL 1 – ALGORITHMIC ADVENTURES

The Labyrinth of Intelligence
“MACHINE” Level

Your first steps in Level 1 to help the detective (your teacher) solve this AI enigma will be to learn how AI works, and some basic concepts connected to Artificial Intelligence: neural network, algorithms, Big Data, Machine Learning, bias, deep fake, etc. To do that, you will be provided with a Detective Assistant Notebook (DAN), where you need to write down your findings while completing all challenges.

Level 1 will have 5 mandatory challenges and 3 additional/optional challenges.

DISCOVERING THE MIND BEHIND THE MACHINE – 1

MANDATORY – 10 MACHINE POINTS + 5 bonus “participation” points.

  • Warm-up questions 1 (big group) (max. 5 bonus “participation” points)
  • Warm-up questions 2 (individual) on Artificial Intelligence for students to check their initial knowledge. (max. 10 “MACHINE” points – 1 per each correct answer)

DISCOVERING THE MIND BEHIND THE MACHINE – 2

MANDATORY10 MACHINE POINTS + 5 bonus “engagement” points.

    • Mind map on AI (1).
Follow your teacher instructions and draw a neural network (concept/mind map) in your Detective Assistant Notebook and explain in your own words what Artificial Intelligence is for you. You know detectives love mind maps! (5 bonus “engagement” points for finishing on time).

    • Video on “Machine Learning” and Quiz.
Now you will watch a video on basic concepts related to “Artificial Intelligence” and “Machine Learning” and answer 10 multiple-choice questions connected to the video content (10 MACHINE points – 1 per each correct answer).

(15 MACHINE points – 1 word account for 1 MACHINE point).

DISCOVERING THE MIND BEHIND THE MACHINE – 4

ADDITIONAL – 5 bonus “creativity” points.

Mind map on AI (2).
Analyse your findings. Redo your drawing with key ideas from the video(s), the quiz and the crossword and modify and/or complete your previous definition.

BE SMART, BE ARTIFICIAL

MANDATORY(in small groups) – 25 MACHINE POINTS (for each group member) + 5 bonus “collaboration” points.

For the moment, I guess you can tell the detective what AI is, can’t you? And what is clear is that although AI may be something difficult to understand, it can undoubtedly perform tasks that we thought only human brains could.

What are these tasks? What can AI do to resemble so much our brain processes? And, more importantly… what CAN’T AI do?

You will now explore different thoughts or processes that are characteristic of human beings, and that Artificial intelligence tries to imitate with apparently good results [to be done in small groups].

Engage in a few lateral thinking games (5) to understand mental processes typical of the human brain that AIs try to replicate.

BE SMART, BE HUMAN

MANDATORY – 20 MACHINE POINTS

Engage in a few more games (1/2) that highlight the unique strengths of human intelligence over artificial intelligence (AI).

  1. The Context Clues Game: Decoding Human Speech. Quiz.
Read a series of sentences or short paragraphs filled with sarcasm, idiomatic expressions, or subtle humor. You need to select the best interpretation or meaning behind the sentence from the multiple-choice options provided (10 “MACHINE” points – 1 each correct answer)

  2. The Adaptability Arena. Survival Scenarios.
You are given a series of “survival scenarios” in varying environments (e.g., stranded in a desert, lost in a foreign city without money) and must come up with survival strategies or ways to thrive.
    • OPTION A) Here is A set of 10 “survival scenarios”. Are the strategies proposed good or bad strategies to survive? (True/ False). Quiz (Max. 10 “MACHINE” points – 1 per each correct True/False answer + 5 bonus “collaboration” points).
    • OPTION B) You need to come up with your own survival strategies. At the end, the teacher will use an AI tool to generate solutions based on the given scenario and compare them with your responses. (Max. 10 “MACHINE” points – 1 per each answer similar to the ones provided as possible solutions in each scenario + 5 bonus “collaboration/reasoning” points).

DISCOVERING THE MIND BEHIND THE MACHINE – DEBRIEFING QUESTIONS

ADDITIONAL – 5 bonus “participation” points.

Reflect on what has been learned in Level 1 challenges and discuss about human mental processes and the answers to the previous games and dilemmas.

Level 1 has come to an end. Now you have a better idea of what AI is and how it works. By completing the challenges in this level, the detective is starting to appreciate human intelligence’s unique attributes but, at the same time, is becoming aware of the implications of such sophisticated an intelligence like AI. For this reason, the detective needs to understand the ethical problems involved in the use of AI. This is the topic of Level 2.

But, before moving on to the next level of investigation, you are required to face an additional final challenge at this stage, so take a look at Challenge #8.

LEVEL 1 DETECTIVE REPORT

ADDITIONAL –  10 MACHINE POINTS.

Write in your Assistant Detective Notebook your final report/chronicle of this level and its challenges: What you have learned; how you have helped the detective, key words, differences between AI and human intelligence, a final AI definition, etc.

LEVEL 2 – EXPERIMENTING WITH DATA

Ethical AI Dilemmas
“CYBORG” Level

After getting to the heart of the matter, the detective has many questions and doubts. He has to reflect on whether the AI has been able to write the same book that the author claims to have written: same quality, same linguistic creativity, same sequence of events, etc. Level 2 consists of analysing the ethical problems of AI and have a deeper insight into the functioning and implications of it. You will face 3 mandatory challenges and 3 optional challenges.

THE TWO SIDES OF JANUS – 1 > PROS AND CONS OF AI. WARM-UP

MANDATORY – 5 CYBORG points.

Analysing the two sides of AI is essential to find out what could have happened in the case of the writer, to discover if there could have been anything illegal, unethical or, simply, to understand the present-day implications of AI. Use your Detective Assistant Notebook to write 5 pros and 5 cons of the use of AI. You can refer to different contexts (educational, work, scientific, political, etc.). Each pro and con written will earn you 0.5 points. You can get a total of 5 of them.

THE TWO SIDES OF JANUS – 2 > VIDEO ON AI ETHICS AND QUIZ

MANDATORY – 20 CYBORG points.

Now you will watch 1 short video on basic concepts related to Ethics and AI and answer 10 multiple-choice questions connected to the video content (20 CYBORG points – 2 per each correct answer)

THE TWO SIDES OF JANUS – 3 > ARGUMENT WAR ON AI

OPTIONAL – 20  CYBORG points + 5 bonus “collaboration/participation” points.

The detective will witness how you engage in one (or various) short debate(s) around complex ethical dilemmas related to AI. You need to form different small groups to prepare arguments around different topics or discussion questions connected to AI. Half of the groups will represent the “pro” position and the other half the “against” position. Members of the winner group of each debate will get 20 CYBORG points; the “loser”, 10 CYBORG points. Points will be awarded by your classmates for articulating well-reasoned arguments, demonstrating understanding of the ethical principles involved, and considering diverse perspectives. You can only use 120 seconds (two minutes) to defend your arguments. The group of each debate pair that can convince the audience (the rest of the groups) and get the most votes (or points, according to a specific rubric) will be the winner.

THE ETHICAL AI QUEST

MANDATORY – 20 CYBORG POINTS + 5 bonus “collaboration/participation” points.

You will engage in an interactive quest to explore ethical debates about AI. You will discuss ethical scenarios and take on roles that help you understand the implications of AI in society. The lesson will culminate in a 10-question multiple-choice quiz to assess your understanding.

  1. AI Ethical Quest: Team Challenge. You are presented (in DAN) with 5 different scenarios in which AI may be used. For each scenario, your team needs to think about the most ethical option and justify your answers. (Each correct option to each scenario will earn you 2 points. Students in each group can get a total of 10 CYBORG points. 5 bonus “collaboration” and “reasoning” points may also be assigned by your teacher.
  2. AI Ethical Quest: Individual Challenge. You will now engage in a Multiple-Choice quiz to assess the knowledge acquired in this lesson (10 “CYBORG” points – 1 each correct answer.)

TWO SIDES OF JANUS. DEBRIEFING SESSION AND QUESTIONS

ADDITIONAL – 5 bonus “participation” points.

Reflect on what has been learned in Level 2 challenges and discuss about ethical implications of AI. These questions prompt you to reflect on the broader ethical implications of AI and how they approached those dilemmas during the activity.

Level 2 has come to an end. Now you should understand better the different implications of AI and its uses. By completing the challenges in this level, the detective is approaching a solution to the writer case. But now, what it is essential is that you help him/her uncover AI products, know how to be critical to distinguish AI from human intelligence and appreciate the need to keep a balance between AI and Human intelligence for a constructive future. This is the topic of Level 3. But, before moving on to the next level of investigation, you should write a detective report on what you have learned in this level, so head to Challenge #6 and see what you can do to earn some additional cyborg points!

LEVEL 2 DETECTIVE REPORT

ADDITIONAL – 10 MACHINE POINTS CYBORG points

Write in your Assistant Detective Notebook your final report/chronicle of this level and its challenges: What you have learned; how you have helped the detective, key words, ethical implications of AI, etc. Share it with the class. (By writing this report you can get 10 additional CYBORG points).

LEVEL 3 –  SOLVING THE AI ENIGMA

Brain and Bots
BRAIN MASTER” Level

At this point, we must help the writer to trust himself, make the best decisions and adapt to the new situation by reflecting on the possible advantages of this new tool and on the possible risks. The detective recalled Kasparov’s words. “A good person and a machine are the best combination”.

Level 3 focuses on understanding the different creative possibilities of AI and Human Intelligence and appreciating the wise integration of AI into our lives. You will face 3 mandatory challenges and 2 additional/optional challenges.

BRAIN OR BOTS – 1 > “ALPHA GO” DOCUMENTARY. QUIZ

MANDATORY – 20 BRAIN MASTER POINTS.

You did great providing arguments to defend different ethical positions in the previous lessons. Now the detective understands the serious positive and negative implications of this “new God”. However, she/he would like to go deeper into one thing that caught their attention: its possibilities to replicate human mind in terms of abstract, creative and artistic thinking. Watch the beginning of the award-winning documentary “Alpha Go” (2017) and select the correct answer in the 20-questions quiz (Multiple Choice).

BRAIN OR BOTS – 2 > UNCOVERING AI

MANDATORY – 20 BRAIN MASTER POINTS.

Look at the images and read the literary fragments. Find out which ones are created by AI. (Brain or Bot?).

THE CREATIVITY CHALLENGE – 1 > CREATIVE AND DEBRIEFING SESSION

ADDITIONAL – 5 BRAIN MASTER POINTS.

Purpose: To showcase human superiority in creating nuanced, original content. You are given 5 words related to AI (e.g., algorithm, data, human, machine, artificial, bot, etc.) and must create a short poem inserting those words. The teacher will use an AI tool to generate a poem based on the same prompts. As a group, you will present and compare the depth, emotional resonance, and creativity of the human-made content versus the AI-generated content. All students will get 5 points if a poem has been created including those 5 words.

BRAIN OR BOTS – 3 >“ALPHA GO” DOCUMENTARY. QUIZ

MANDATORY – 10 BRAIN MASTER POINTS.

This game is all about stories, about stories created by AI or real-life stories where AI is the main character. Don’t you want to know how the “Alpha Go” Documentary ends? Watch another fragment of the documentary and pick the correct answer in the 10-questions quiz (Multiple Choice).

THE CREATIVITY CHALLENGE. UNDERSTANDING CREATIVITY IN AI VS. HUMAN INTELLIGENCE

MANDATORY – 20 BRAIN MASTER POINTS.

You will explore and understand the differences between AI and human intelligence in terms of creativity through a couple of quizzes.

  1. Quiz on Creativity: You will show what they know about creativity and how they think AI and humans differ in this regard. Choose the correct answer in the 10-questions quiz (Multiple Choice). Each question and correct answer will earn you 1 BRAIN MASTER point. You can get a total of 10 of them.
  2. Video “Does AI have creativity and imagination?”. Quiz. Watch the video and answer the 10-questions quiz (Multiple Choice). Each question and correct answer will earn you 1 BRAIN MASTER point. You can get a total of 10 of them.

BRAINS AND BOTS. DEBRIEFING SESSION AND QUESTIONS

ADDITIONAL – 5 bonus “BRAIN MASTER” points.

Reflect on what has been learned in Level 2 challenges, especially about creativity and imagination and how AIs and humans differ in this aspect.

LEVEL 2 DETECTIVE REPORT AND STORY ENDING

ADDITIONAL – 10 BRAIN MASTER points.

Write in your Detective Assistant Notebook your final report/chronicle of this level and its challenges.

This time, the report will focus on solving the AI literary enigma. Of course, many of you will have different ideas of what may have happened and how could it be solved.

For that, you will explore the creative capabilities of AI versus human intelligence by individually crafting an ending to the detective story.

You will compare their human-generated ending to an AI-generated one (done by the teacher) and vote on which ending they find more compelling.

(By writing this story end you can get 10 additional BRAIN MASTER points).

After each student presents during next lesson or upload the story to your learning e-platform, students will quickly rate their ending on a scale of 1-5 for Creativity, 1-3 for Clarity, and 1-2 for Resolution.

Write the total score on the board.
